It is no longer news that the abducted Magajin Garin Daura and father in-law to President Buhari’s ADC, Alhaji Musa Umar Uba has been rescued yesterday by the Police in Kano. It is also no longer news that he was kidnapped at President Buhari’s home town of Daura. Instead of celebrating we should be asking ourselves what went wrong with our security artechecture for them to have spent over two months without locating the victim. His case is even better because he belongs to the privileged class backed by a strong support from Aso Rock. Many in his position have died in the hands of their captors because they don’t have anybody to stand for them while the police or other security agencies are lacklustre, they will say they don’t have resources to broaden and intensify rescue mission. What are we celebrating if the ‘intelligence’ we have cannot track criminals within hours of operation and apprehend them? What are we celebrating if our security agencies cannot be prompt and vigorous whenever a common person is abducted? What do we celebrate if the nation we have is ONLY for those in position of power and authority?

With the resources of the nation, they took the Magajin Garin Daura promptly to Abuja and in a Presidential jet where he will get the best medical evaluation and treatment. He may probably be taken to the best hospital in the world. Are our leaders really leading by example? What of hundreds of helpless citizens that are being attacked, kidnapped, robbed, killed almost on a daily basis in Nigeria? The story is the same whenever a common person is kidnapped. No action, no follow up investigations, in fact, victims families are being told categorically to go and negotiate with the kidnappers as the only option to save the lives of their loved ones. Such cases are many. In the opinion of DESERT HERALD, there’s no point to celebrate or even commend the security agencies for the rescue of the Magajin Garin Daura in a country where a great number of such similar cases are left at the mercy of victims families, friends and associates, in a country where the life of the poor in situations like this is cheaper than that of an animal.
