The remains of Maryam Ahmad Gumi, daughter of the revered scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi was buried today, Monday at the cemetery of the family home of his late father, Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi amidst tears from loved ones and gratitude to almighty Allah for the decent and fulfilled life of late Maryam.
Prior to her death, late Maryam has been on admission several times in the hospital. Initially, doctors concluded that she has acute peptic ulcer and she has been treated many times for the supposed ailment. It was eventually discovered in a private hospital in Abuja that she has an advanced tumour in her stomach which investigations concluded that it is a cancer. DESERT HERALD learnt that as arrangements by her family has reached advance stage for her to be flown to India to a specialist cancer hospital at New Delhi, late Maryam became unconscious due to the severity of the tumour. Her case according to doctors at the National Hospital in Abuja became emergency and the need to immediately remove the tumour was emphasised by the doctors since she is not even fit to embark on a long journey.
The fact that her father is also a medical doctor, a decision in consultation with the doctors was reached for an emergency surgery. She was operated successfully but she remained at the Intensive Care Unit of the National Hospital for close to a week due to the severity of her case. The effect of the cancer drug she is taking in the aftermath of the surgery also unsettled her and kept her on admission and under close medical supervision.
When there is visible signs of improvement even though with so much uncertainty because of how cancer can easily spread even after surgery, Maryam was discharged from the hospital last Friday but she remained in Abuja attending follow-up treatment at the hospital. Maryam died precisely two days after she was discharged ending her long battle with cancer. Even as a young lady consumed by a deadly disease, Maryam was faithful to her creator throughout her health challenges. She is strong and hopeful that she will survive it.
Maryam Gumi died at the age of 22. Until her demise on Monday, she is a 200 level student of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Thousands of well wishers were at the family house of the Gumi’s at Modibbo Adama road for the funeral prayers and burial of Maryam. The prayers was led by her father, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. In attendance were former governors of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, Mukthar Ramalan Yero, Yaro Makama Rigacikun, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigacikun, Malam Tukur Adam almannar, the Chief Imams of Danfodio, SMC mosque and many others.
