Regard Reinstating Senator Samuel Anyanwu As PDP Secretary As Right Step
By Lawan Munkaila
The decision by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary has drawn varied reactions from within and outside the party. While some interpreted the move through the lens of factional interest or past political grievances, it is imperative to address the matter with fairness, facts, and fidelity to party principles.
Let me begin by applauding the maturity and courage demonstrated by the Acting National Chairman of our great party, His Excellency, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum. His leadership has consistently favored justice over division and principle over politics. I also commend the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, His Excellency, Senator Bala Mohammed, for standing with legality and party unity.
Upholding the Constitution of the Party
Senator Samuel Anyanwu was not appointed by fiat; he was elected by party delegates at the National Convention – the highest decision-making body of the PDP. No court of law or resolution of the National Executive Committee have removed him from that position. To deny him access to his office without due process would amount to trampling on our constitution and setting a dangerous precedent.
The Rule of Law Must Stand
At this defining moment, we must choose: Are we a party of rules or a party of convenience? The PDP has always prided itself as a custodian of democracy. To override an elected official without legal basis would be to betray that legacy. The leadership of Ambassador Damagum have proven that we can correct wrongs without compromising the rule of law.
Party Unity Over Personal Interests
PDP is at a crossroads. The internal crisis fueled by political ambitions must not be allowed to derail the party’s rebuilding efforts. Reinstating Senator Anyanwu is not a move of favoritism – it is a necessary corrective action to ensure that legitimacy, not loyalty, remains the foundation of our leadership structure.
Those resisting his return must reconsider whether their stand is truly in the interest of the party or simply rooted in personal political calculations. Party survival must come before individual survival.
A Warning Against Internal Purging
Today it’s Senator Anyanwu; tomorrow, it could be any other elected official. If we normalize bypassing due process to settle internal scores, we risk turning the PDP into a fragile structure built on emotion and exclusion.
The Damagum-led leadership is reminding us that reconciliation and justice are not contradictory – they are complementary.
Moving Forward
The 2027 elections are not far. Nigerians are watching. The opposition we seek to defeat is not just external – it’s internal disunity, unconstitutional actions, and political intolerance. The time to unite and reform is now.
Senator Anyanwu’s reinstatement should not be a subject of controversy, but rather a rallying point for all who believe in the future of the PDP.
