TINUBU OWES ATIKU AN APOLOGY: HE CALLED HIM IGNORANT, THEN COPIED HIS BLUE-PRINT

TINUBU OWES ATIKU AN APOLOGY: HE CALLED HIM IGNORANT, THEN COPIED HIS BLUE-PRINT
By Sanusi Muhammad

At 4pm on Friday, October 9, 2026, the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua International Centre in Abuja stopped being a conference hall, but became a classroom. The teacher was the Wazirin Adamawa himself. The pupil, although absent, but was thoroughly examined. He was Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The masquerading president of Nigeria who has failed the people’s test.

As invited journalists not party members, we still sat among members of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council who were to be inaugurated. We did not reach for our phones. We did not lean over to whisper to the man beside us. From “Protocol” to the closing remarks of “Thank you”, we paid the kind of rapt attention a man pays only when he knows he is watching a Government being dismantled, one sentence at a time.

The venue itself spoke. The hall bears the name of General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, the man in whose political school Atiku Abubakar learnt his craft. On Friday, the student of that school stood under his teacher’s name and gave the President of Nigeria a lesson he will not forget before 16th January.

*THE IGNORANT MAN WHO CALLED ATIKU IGNORANT*

Let the record be clear about what happened.

When Atiku Abubakar set out a targeted plan to bring down the cost of fuel, Tinubu and his Government did not engage it. They sneered at it. They called the ADC candidate ignorant of economic policy. They told Nigerians it could not be done.

Then an election came into view, and the same Government that mocked the plan hurriedly picked it up, stripped it of everything that makes it work, and announced it to the nation as its own bright idea: a 30-day discount on petrol but at only NNPC stations.

*So who is ignorant now?*

A man who dismisses an idea as ignorance and then copies it has convicted himself twice. First of arrogance, for mocking what he did not understand. Then of incompetence, for copying it without understanding it still. Atiku said it plainly in that hall: Tinubu owes him an apology. More importantly, he owes Nigerians an answer.

*”You Owe me an Apology. But more importantly, you owe Nigerians an Answer: what happens on day 31?”*

*THE DULL STUDENT*

Atiku did not merely accuse. He drew the picture, and the whole country including the blind can now see it.

He described a dull student who copied his classmate’s answer so blindly that he copied the classmate’s name at the top of the exam paper, then demanded marks for original thinking. That student is the Tinubu Government. It heard the words “production subsidy”, understood nothing, and handed Nigerians a 30-day sweetener with an immediate expiry date.

He went further. Tinubu’s boys, he said, walked into the classroom, copied the lesson from the board, and understood it in French, since their master now spends more of his time in France.

*”Bola, you see why it is Good to go to School!”*

This is the Government that lectures Nigerians about economics. This is the Government that asks for four more years ostensibly to bury everyone.

,*1,229 DAYS OF PAIN, 30 DAYS OF PITY*

Atiku opened with a charge sheet that every Nigerian already carries in his pocket. A sack of local foodstuff that costs more at every market visit. A journey to work that swallows the salary. A business that cannot keep its lights on. A farm its owner is afraid to visit. A traveler that fears the road and no sure of safety.

That is Tinubu’s record. Not a slogan, not a statistic, but the daily life of a nation.

For 1,229 days, this government told Nigerians to be patient and make sacrifice. For 1,229 days, it watched the price of petrol drag up the price of everything else. For 1,229 days, it called the suffering “reform” while the President, his family and his friends travelled the world in comfort

Now, with the election in sight, Tinubu has suddenly discovered the people’s pain. His answer to 1,229 days of hardship is 30 days of unplanned discount. Atiku called it what it is: a late confession and acceptance of failure, Deception 101, a “Yahoo-yahoo subsidy”.

You do not crush a people for three and a half years and then ask them to clap for a ₦50 meal coupon.

*THE PRESIDENT WHO BLAMES EVERYONE BUT HIMSELF*

Even in retreat, Tinubu reached for the same tired excuse: blame those who came before. Atiku shut that door permanently.

You are the President, he told him. The price of petrol is your problem. The collapse of purchasing power is your problem. The shops closing under fuel and power costs are your problems.

*”Take Responsibility for the Country you Govern.”*

A man who cannot take responsibility for his own decisions after 1,229 days in office is not a leader but a jester. He is a tenant waiting to be served notice. On 16th January 2027, Nigerians will serve it with pride.

*A SUGAR RUSH AGAINST A PLAN*

What lifted the speech above a beating was that Atiku did not stop at exposing Tinubu. He showed Nigerians what real policy looks like not the Tinubu foolery.

Tinubu’s discount is *”a sugar rush masquerading as economic policy”*: a brief taste of relief, then a more devastating crash when the 30 days relief ends. Families cannot plan meals around it. Transporters cannot fix stable fares on it. Businesses cannot invest on it. Atiku asked the questions the government has no answer to. Will fares fall? Who will enforce it? What about the farmer moving produce, the trader restocking shop, the manufacturer running a generator, the family that never fills a tank but pays for fuel in every loaf of bread and Akara?

Atiku’s production subsidy plan is built to last. Support goes only to petroleum products refined in Nigeria and sold to Nigerians. Imports are excluded. The support is capped, written into the budget, and independently audited. The public sees what it costs and what it saves. Families get relief they can count on, and Nigerian refiners get a reason to produce more.

One is a 30-day election stunt. The other is an economic architecture. Tinubu copied the title and left out the substance ignorantly.

*THE MANNER OF THE MAN*

I have listened to many speeches in many halls in line of duty. What I witnessed on Friday, October 10th, was a master of the platform at full command.

Atiku moved through three registers without once losing the room. He began as a prosecutor, reading out the charge sheet. He became a teacher, turning Tinubu’s own announcement into an examination the President could not pass, with humour sharp enough to wound and light enough to enjoy. Then he became a statesman, speaking on the sovereignty of the vote with the gravity that subject demands.

Every laugh carried a point. “Wait a minute, Bola” was not a jibe for its own sake; it was the pivot that turned a government press release into evidence for the prosecution.

And beneath the wit sat the composure of a man who spent eight years at the heart of the Federal Executive Council. He reminded the nation that on September 18, 2026, in his State of the Nation address, he offered to share his economic relief plan with the government in the national interest. Tinubu refused, gathered what Atiku called his “team of jesters”, and produced a coupon. Atiku did not sulk. He said Nigerians’ welfare matters more to him than who gets the credit. He ignored T-Pain.

That is the difference between the two men. One offered his plan freely. The other mocked it, then stole it badly for political gain.

*THREE LESSONS FOR BOLA AND HIS SURROGATES*

Then Atiku turned to the Campaign Council Members, and handed their first assignment. The first students, he said, are Bola and his boys. The curriculum has three lessons.

Lesson one: support goes to petroleum products refined in Nigeria and sold to Nigerians.
Lesson two: it must be capped, budgeted and audited.
Lesson three: Nigerians will still need relief after day 30.

*”Bring your Economic Advisers to class. This time, listen before you copy.”*

Those three lessons are now the most portable message of this campaign. A motor park tout can repeat them. A student union leader can repeat them. A village farmer can repeat them. They will taken to every market, motor park, farm, campus and street, exactly as directed.

He also charged the Council to be known for the work it does, not the titles its members carry.

*NO RIGGING, NO NO-GO AREAS*

The final movement of the speech was a warning to Tinubu’s machinery.

Atiku declared that *”transparency is not a crime.”* He demanded that every polling unit result be made public immediately; that state and national collation centres be broadcast live; that election technology be independently audited before and after the polls; and that an independent commission be established to investigate and prosecute electoral offences, with severe penalties for vote suppression and result tampering.

He served notice on the APC-controlled federal and state governments that there will be no “no-go” areas for the opposition anywhere in Nigeria, recalling the attempt to block an opposition candidate from campaigning in Benue. A government confident of its record does not block its opponents from the road. Only a government afraid of the people does that.

Atiku will surely campaign from the creeks to the savannahs, and will defend that right by every lawful means, in the Courts and the ballot box.

*WHAT THE SPEECH HAS DONE*

First, the subsidy argument has changed hands for good. Tinubu is now fighting on Atiku’s ground, with Atiku’s idea, badly and haphazardly copied. Every day the discount runs confirms that Atiku was right. The day it ends proves that Tinubu never understood, and will never understand for absence of conventional education.

Second, the “ignorance” insult has turned on its author. The man who called Atiku ignorant now stands before Nigerians as the student caught copying for being ignorant but brandishing fake Chicago State University Degree in Economics.

Third, the campaign has its question. “What happens on day 31?” is short enough for a WhatsApp status and heavy enough to sink a government.

Fourth, the Council left the Yar’Adua Centre with a curriculum, a message and a mission.

Fifth, electoral integrity is on the record in specific, measurable demands, long before the first ballot is cast.

Atiku closed by telling Tinubu that 30 days cannot erase three and a half years of hardship, and that after this admission of failure, the honourable thing to do is step down. Tinubu will not take the honourable path. He never has. So Nigerians will take it for him on January 16, 2027.

From today, less than100 days remain until 16 January 2027. Tinubu has offered Nigerians 30 days of pity. Atiku Abubakar has offered them a plan for every day after. Tinubu owes Atiku an apology, and he owes Nigerians 1,229 days of answers. Dust off your PVC. Day 31 is coming, and so is the day of judgement.
