From BAUCHI — Tragedy struck late Monday evening when no fewer than nine people were burned beyond recognition in a horrific head-on collision near Zangoro village along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway in Bauchi State.
According to reports, the fatal road traffic crash occurred when two vehicles travelling in opposite directions collided with a high impact, triggering a fierce fire that engulfed both vehicles.

The intensity of the blaze left nine occupants trapped inside the wreckage, with their bodies burned beyond recognition before rescue efforts could reach them. Several other passengers reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with thick smoke and flames consuming the vehicles moments after the collision, making it impossible for bystanders to rescue those trapped inside.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other emergency responders arrived at the scene to evacuate the victims, clear the wreckage, and restore the free flow of traffic along the busy highway.

Although the exact cause of the crash had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, preliminary accounts suggest that excessive speed or dangerous overtaking may have contributed to the collision.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road safety awareness, and greater caution by motorists.

The identities of the deceased had not been released as of press time, while authorities continue efforts to notify their families.
