RADDA STANDS WITH TINUBU, TINUBU STANDS WITH KATSINA: THE GOVERNOR TURNING POLITICAL LOYALTY INTO A PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
From openly crediting the President for federal support to mobilising political heavyweights and grassroots structures, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda is building a powerful case for a political alliance anchored in loyalty, cooperation and development.

In Nigerian politics, loyalty is often proclaimed in the language of party slogans, campaign promises and public declarations. Yet the more revealing test of a political relationship is whether its leading figures acknowledge one another’s contributions, stand together when the political atmosphere becomes difficult, and translate their alliance into tangible benefits for the people they represent. By this measure, Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda, has repeatedly demonstrated an unmistakable commitment to working with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Radda is not merely a governor who shares a political platform with the President. He has become one of the prominent voices in the North-West openly defending Tinubu’s economic reforms, acknowledging the Federal Government’s interventions in Katsina and mobilising political stakeholders behind the President’s national leadership. His approach presents a particular model of political partnership: one in which support for the President is communicated publicly, defended politically and connected to the practical responsibilities of governing a state.
What makes this relationship particularly significant is that Radda has not confined his appreciation to ceremonial occasions. At different public engagements, he has identified specific areas where federal decisions, funding and policy reforms have supported Katsina’s development priorities. In a political environment where leaders can sometimes be reluctant to acknowledge contributions beyond their own administrations, his willingness to give credit to the President offers a notable example of public political accountability.
THE GOVERNOR WHO OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE PRESIDENT’S CONTRIBUTIONS
One of the clearest demonstrations of Radda’s position came in June 2025, when President Tinubu visited Katsina and commissioned major projects, including the state’s Agricultural Mechanisation Centre. During the visit, Radda publicly acknowledged federal support for the state, including a ₦25 billion Federal Government intervention associated with agricultural mechanisation.
According to the State House account of the visit, Radda explained that the intervention supported the acquisition of 400 tractors for the state’s agricultural mechanisation programme. The President, in turn, praised Radda’s administration for its work in agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare and education, describing the governor’s performance as commendable.
The exchange was significant because it demonstrated that federal-state cooperation could be discussed in concrete terms. The President acknowledged the governor’s delivery efforts, while the governor acknowledged federal assistance that could help extend the reach of those efforts to farmers and communities. The relationship was therefore presented not simply as political solidarity, but as a partnership with practical development implications.
The security situation has provided another important illustration. In June 2026, Radda announced that President Tinubu had approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen security operations in Katsina. The governor openly appreciated the approval and commended the Federal Government for increased security deployments and coordination.
For a state whose communities have experienced persistent insecurity, such interventions are more than political talking points. They concern the protection of lives, the safety of farming communities, the movement of goods and people, and the ability of residents to resume ordinary economic activities. Radda’s public acknowledgement of the President’s role in these efforts reinforces the message that state and federal authorities must work together to confront shared challenges.
These are documented examples of the governor giving credit where he believes it is due. They help explain why his relationship with Tinubu has become a defining feature of his political positioning. (Sources: The State House, June 2025; Katsina State Government, June 16, 2026.)
“TINUBU’S REFORMS ARE HELPING STATES DELIVER”: A PUBLIC DEFENCE OF THE PRESIDENT’S AGENDA
Perhaps the most direct evidence of Radda’s support came in August 2026, when he publicly defended the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
Speaking at the Tinubu/Dikko Assured programme in Katsina, the governor said the reforms were helping state governments finance development projects, meet salary and pension obligations, and reduce their dependence on borrowing.
Radda also stated that his administration had executed projects worth more than ₦30 billion without taking loans, while continuing to meet its obligations to workers and pensioners. His argument was that the reforms, despite the difficult economic circumstances confronting Nigerians, had expanded the financial capacity available to governments willing to manage their resources prudently.
This was not an insignificant statement. Economic reforms, particularly those associated with subsidy removal and changes to public revenue arrangements, have generated considerable debate across the country. Governors have had to confront difficult questions about the cost of living, public spending, social protection and the delivery of essential services.
Against this background, Radda chose to make a public case for the benefits he believes the reforms have brought to Katsina and other states.
He did not merely praise Tinubu in general terms. He connected the President’s policies to the financial capacity of subnational governments and the possibility of delivering projects without resorting to additional borrowing.
That distinction matters. It shows a governor prepared to defend a policy direction because he believes it has created opportunities for development, while also presenting his own administration’s fiscal management as part of the explanation for the results.
The governor’s remarks were reported by Channels Television on August 17, 2026, and by the Katsina State Government. They provide a clear example of Radda openly associating his administration’s development financing with the economic direction of the Tinubu presidency.
A POLITICAL ALLY WHO DOES NOT RETREAT FROM HIS POSITION
Political alliances are often easiest to maintain when circumstances are favourable. Their durability becomes clearer when public statements are misinterpreted, political disagreements emerge or competing interests attempt to create distance between partners.
In April 2026, the Katsina State Government issued a clarification after remarks by Radda about leadership accountability were interpreted by some commentators as criticism of Tinubu. The government maintained that the governor’s comments concerned state and local government leaders, not the President, and reaffirmed Radda’s support for Tinubu.
The clarification highlighted a central feature of the governor’s political position: he has sought to maintain a distinction between demanding accountability from public officeholders and undermining the national administration with which he is politically aligned.
This distinction is important in a democratic system. Political loyalty does not have to mean abandoning the principle that elected leaders should be assessed by their performance. Nor should every call for accountability automatically be interpreted as an attack on a political ally.
Radda’s public position, as articulated by his government, is that support for Tinubu and accountability in governance can coexist. The relationship is presented as one of cooperation and shared political purpose rather than a prohibition on discussing public performance.
His willingness to reiterate that position has helped keep the relationship at the centre of his political identity.
FEBRUARY 2026: WHEN KATSINA’S POLITICAL HEAVYWEIGHTS GATHERED BEHIND TINUBU
Radda’s support for Tinubu has also been demonstrated through political organisation, not just public statements.
On February 2, 2026, a high-level APC stakeholders’ gathering in Katsina brought together prominent party figures, former governors, legislators, local government chairmen, councillors, party elders and grassroots representatives. The meeting endorsed Tinubu and Radda ahead of the 2027 elections.
The gathering, reported by the Katsina State Government on February 4, illustrated the governor’s capacity to bring a broad range of political actors into a common forum. The reported attendance included representatives from the state’s 361 wards, as well as national and state political officeholders.
Radda used the occasion to frame the alliance between Katsina and the South-West as a longstanding political relationship, arguing that cooperation across regional lines has been part of Nigeria’s democratic history.
The significance of the event extended beyond the endorsement itself. It demonstrated an effort to connect the President’s political fortunes to an organised state-level network encompassing party leadership, elected representatives and community-level structures.
In practical terms, such mobilisation matters in Nigerian politics. National political support is rarely sustained by statements from governors alone. It depends on the work of party executives, local government leaders, ward structures, elected officials, community influencers and other political actors who communicate with voters where they live.
Radda’s role in convening these groups indicates that his support for Tinubu is being pursued as an organised political project rather than an isolated expression of personal loyalty.
FROM GOVERNMENT HOUSE TO THE GRASSROOTS: BUILDING A WIDER COALITION
The relationship between Radda and Tinubu is not confined to the political establishment. Its wider reach is reflected in the involvement of grassroots organisations and associations that have publicly endorsed both leaders.
In September 2026, The Guardian reported that a coalition comprising more than 4,000 political groups and associations across Katsina’s 34 local government areas had endorsed Tinubu and Radda for the 2027 elections.
The coalition cited the development records of the two administrations as the basis for its decision. Radda welcomed the endorsement and linked the groups’ support to the role they had played in the political process that produced the current APC leadership.
This development offers an important indication of the breadth of the political network associated with the governor and the President. It suggests that their alliance has constituencies beyond senior government officials and prominent party leaders.
Nevertheless, the significance of such endorsements should be understood accurately. They demonstrate organised political support among the participating groups; they do not, by themselves, establish the views of every resident or voter in Katsina. The wider electorate will ultimately judge both administrations on their records, policies and ability to address public concerns.
Even with that distinction, the scale of the reported coalition illustrates the political infrastructure being assembled around the Tinubu-Radda partnership. It also shows how the governor’s public support for the President is reinforced by a broader effort to mobilise associations, party structures and community-level actors.
WHEN FEDERAL SUPPORT BECOMES A STATE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY
One of the most compelling aspects of Radda’s approach is his repeated effort to connect the President’s interventions with the needs of Katsina’s people.
In agriculture, federal support for mechanisation has been associated with the acquisition of tractors and the expansion of services intended to help farmers. In security, the approval for 1,000 forest guards represents a further intervention intended to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities. In public finance, Radda has argued that the Federal Government’s economic reforms have expanded the resources available to states to execute projects and meet recurrent obligations.
These examples reveal why the relationship matters beyond the calculations of party politics. Katsina’s development challenges cannot be resolved by the state government acting alone. Security operations require coordination across levels of government. Agricultural transformation depends on infrastructure, financing, inputs, mechanisation and access to markets. Education, healthcare and social protection similarly benefit from sustained cooperation between federal and state institutions.
A governor who maintains an effective working relationship with the President can create opportunities for stronger coordination, access to federal programmes and attention to state priorities. The ultimate measure, however, is whether these opportunities produce lasting improvements in people’s lives.
Radda’s public acknowledgements therefore carry two messages. Politically, they reinforce his commitment to Tinubu. Institutionally, they underline his argument that collaboration between the two administrations is helping Katsina pursue its development agenda.
That is a more consequential proposition than loyalty for its own sake.
THE PRESIDENT’S RECOGNITION OF RADDA’S LEADERSHIP
The relationship is also notable because appreciation has not been entirely one-sided.
During his June 2025 visit to Katsina, Tinubu praised Radda’s performance in agriculture, infrastructure and social development. The President highlighted the completion of a 24-kilometre road within 18 months and commended the governor’s investment in agricultural mechanisation.
Tinubu also assured Katsina residents that the Federal Government would stand with the state as it confronted security challenges.
The exchange provides a useful illustration of political reciprocity. Radda publicly acknowledges federal interventions, while Tinubu recognises the state government’s development efforts and pledges federal cooperation.
For the people of Katsina, the value of such a relationship lies in what it enables both governments to accomplish. Public recognition is welcome, but it becomes more meaningful when it is accompanied by coordinated action, transparent financing, measurable outcomes and sustained attention to citizens’ needs.
The relationship should therefore be assessed not only through the warmth of public statements but also through the continuity of federal support, the quality of state-level implementation and the results achieved in communities.
WHY RADDA’S POSITION RESONATES WITH POLITICAL STAKEHOLDERS
Radda’s political appeal among supporters of the Tinubu administration rests on several mutually reinforcing elements.
First, he has been consistent in publicly identifying himself with the President’s economic direction. His August 2026 defence of the reforms demonstrated a willingness to explain their claimed benefits rather than leave the argument entirely to federal officials.
Second, he has connected that policy position to identifiable state priorities, including agricultural mechanisation, security and the financing of development projects. This gives his support a practical dimension that goes beyond party affiliation.
Third, he has invested in political mobilisation. The February 2026 stakeholders’ gathering and the September 2026 coalition endorsement demonstrate the presence of organised networks seeking to sustain the alliance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Finally, he has maintained a public narrative of cooperation between the federal and state governments, even when his remarks have been the subject of political interpretation and controversy.
Together, these factors help explain why Radda is increasingly associated with the effort to consolidate Tinubu’s political support in Katsina. They also suggest that his influence within the alliance is linked not simply to his office as governor, but to his ability to bring political structures together around a shared agenda.
LOYALTY MUST ULTIMATELY DELIVER RESULTS
There is, however, a crucial distinction between political loyalty and effective governance. Supporting the President, defending federal reforms and mobilising party stakeholders may strengthen an alliance, but none of these activities alone guarantees better living conditions for ordinary citizens.
Katsina’s people will continue to judge their government by the issues that affect their daily lives: security in rural communities, the affordability of food, access to quality healthcare, educational opportunities, reliable infrastructure, employment and the responsible use of public funds.
The Tinubu-Radda relationship will be most valuable if it continues to generate cooperation that advances these priorities. Federal support should be transparently accounted for, state programmes should be evaluated against measurable targets, and public claims of progress should remain open to scrutiny.
This is not a contradiction of political loyalty. It is what makes the partnership worth defending.
Indeed, the most persuasive case for Radda’s approach is that a governor can acknowledge the President’s contributions without diminishing his own administration’s responsibilities. Equally, a President can support a state government while expecting it to deliver results and remain accountable to its citizens.
That balance is essential to a mature political relationship.
A PARTNERSHIP WHOSE LEGACY WILL BE WRITTEN BY THE PEOPLE
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has provided substantial public evidence of his willingness to stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has openly praised the President’s reforms, acknowledged federal interventions in agriculture and security, defended the relationship when his remarks were misinterpreted, and mobilised a wide network of political stakeholders around their shared political project.
These actions make his support more visible and organised than a routine expression of party allegiance. They also explain why his relationship with Tinubu has become an important part of Katsina’s political conversation ahead of 2027.
But the enduring significance of the alliance will not be determined by endorsements alone. It will depend on whether the cooperation between Abuja and Katsina continues to improve security, strengthen livelihoods, expand opportunities and deliver public services more effectively.
For Radda, the challenge is to convert political access into sustained development. For Tinubu, it is to ensure that federal reforms and interventions translate into meaningful improvements for Nigerians, including the people of Katsina.
And for the citizens who ultimately bear the consequences of political decisions, the standard remains clear: loyalty is valuable when it serves the public interest, partnership matters when it delivers results, and leadership earns lasting respect when its promises become tangible improvements in people’s lives.
Radda’s message is unmistakable: he is prepared to acknowledge Tinubu’s support publicly, defend the value of their partnership and mobilise political stakeholders around a shared direction. The ultimate test of that partnership, however, will be the progress it delivers to Katsina and the people it is meant to serve.
